Mathematics Project Competition for Secondary Schools (2023/24)

The Mathematics Project Competition for Secondary Schools is organised by the Mathematics Education Section, Curriculum Support Division, Education Bureau. It aims at promoting students’ interest in learning Mathematics and developing students’ generic skills through project learning. The competition comprises two categories: Category A (Junior secondary project) and Category B (S1 mini-project).

Introduction

The project aims at investigating the maximum number of pieces of a star shape that can be obtained after several cuts and its strategy. The project starts from cutting different polygons, then changes for other shapes to find the strategy to maximize the number of pieces.

In our project, we will model the temperature change in Hong Kong in the future 20 years by using the data in the past 20 years. We then model the effect on the temperature when all glaciers in the world melts. These aims at drawing the public’s attention on joining hands to address the climate change.
