How can we make Hong Kong better?  You can try showing others some acts of kindness.  If we can be more loving and caring, everyone in Hong Kong will be happier.

As long as we are friendly to each other, Hong Kong will become a city full of love and care!

As we know, culture is the blood and vein of every society.  If you lose it, everything will become lifeless.  I am always proud of being a Chinese due to having such a superb and colorful culture.  Among them, our distinctive Chinese culinary culture deserves to be preserved and inherited. 

There is an old Chinese saying, “People do care a lot about what they eat”（民以食為天）.  China’s long history and rich culture have given birth to distinctive Chinese culinary art.  With several thousand years of history, Chinese cuisine was admired by people all over the world.  Our traditional dishes are famous for their color, taste, meanings, and appearance.  We have a wide variety of cooking techniques, namely stewing, braising, boiling, pan-frying and steaming.  The diverse cooking techniques show the wisdom of Chinese people.  One of the most famous dishes is hotpot.  In the past, hot pot used to be favored only in winter.  Now, hot pot is welcomed by every family all year round.  Like many Chinese people, I love gathering around the pot with my family and enjoy eating, chatting, drinking and having fun with them.  Dim sum is another popular Cantonese cuisine with a large range of small dishes, including dumplings, rolls, cakes, meat, seafood and dessert.  I enjoy drinking tea with my family at the weekend.  I can’t imagine a day when all those dishes no longer exist.  We must inherit and develop it further by all means.

Don’t treat them like any other

They are unique in their own way

Some get flowers, some get haters

Some receive blessing, some obtain nothing

Laughing in a crowd, crying out aloud

Being a Chinese, I’ve perceived the unique kind of delicacy beneath our Chinese culture and established cultural values that will abide with me throughout my life, from the language I speak to the way I behave.  We’re all identified and labeled to which ethnicity we are.  For decades, our ancestors have been passing the culture onto the next generation and it has become a bridge to connect us.  Therefore, from the little parts in our daily lives, we discover our innate virtues: ren, yi, li, zhi; which have ultimately created this respectful community nowadays.  Frankly, we have sidelined some obsolete behaviors like bird-keeping and lantern-making; they both have a grim future in regard to progressively changeable modern world.  The iconic and buoyant lion’s dance performance from my childhood was still vivid in my head: the vibrant throb of the drums and the dynamic moves of the performers.  It has definitely been a gnawing feeling to me, knowing that our culture might fade away someday if we don’t try to preserve it.  I’m certainly a Hongkonger, but am I still worthy of the inscription if I don’t ever strive to protect my culture, my homeland?  No, of course.  We are raised to be responsible and patriotic; it might be an intrinsic feeling of devotion to our country.  But we are alive and well, and therefore, no matter how trivial you might think this is, it is significant to our nation.  So let’s embrace our culture, and love Hong Kong together!

In our life, everyone cannot do things perfectly and they may have done something wrong as no one is perfect.  Regarding other people’s life and work, if we could learn to empathize, respect others, and treat others with a tolerant heart, life will be beautiful.  Then, how can we achieve the goal of “Think from Others’ Perspectives, Foster Harmony and Be Respectful”?  There are many people of different nationalities living in Hong Kong.  We should be more accepting of them and their personalities, understand local customs or beliefs of their identities, and respect each other.  If we show mutual respect, I believe we can live in harmony.  Although there are many people of different nationalities and everyone in this world has a different personality, they are all unique individuals.  So, I think we should respect each other.  To achieve this, I think the schools can organize more activities for us to have the chance to make different friends, and get in touch with others more.  In order to let primary and secondary school students understand this topic better and have a positive lifestyle, I think schools can also add more booth games and lectures to raise the students’ awareness of this topic.
