The Mathematics Project Competition for Secondary Schools is organised by the Mathematics Education Section, Curriculum Development Institute, Education Bureau. It aims at promoting students’ interest in learning Mathematics and developing students’ generic skills through project learning. The competition comprises two categories: Category A (Junior secondary project) and Category B (S1 mini-project).

The project studies the famous mathematical game “The Tower of Hanoi” and its variations. A general formula of the least number of steps to solve the original Tower of Hanoi is produced as well as its variations.

Brief of Work

The project aims to explore the characteristics (including the size and the shape) of the plane area of the projection of cube, regular tetrahedron and regular octahedron, and find out the properties and relationship among their maximum areas and their minimum areas.
