Journey to Heliocentrism
Theme of the Portfolio
Brief of Work
Our work is based on the article about the Scientific Revolution in the Junior Secondary History e-Reading Award Scheme 2024. It is a board game titled “Journey to Heliocentrism”, and is inspired by the life of the Polish astronomer Nicholaus Copernicus in the article. In this game, players can act as the imaginary disciples of Copernicus and compete against each other to help Copernicus prove his heliocentric theory.
This board game intertwines learning and playing in the design. The eccentric board design encompasses a smiling sun that acts as the finishing point and there are illustrations of stars and planets. The spiraling design mirrors the layout of Copernicus’ most well-known achievement – the heliocentric model. Players can truly experience history and progress along with the development of science while playing the game. The sun in the middle signifies positive energy, just like how Copernicus devoted his life to prove the sun-centric theory of the universe and make contribution to the understanding of the universe.
In addition, we also create a collection of “Event cards” and “Discovery cards”. These cards can help deepen the players’ understanding of the virtues demonstrated by Copernicus such as diligence, empathy and resilience. Moreover, the importance of teamwork in the scientific realm is shown in the game as brilliant scientists like Copernicus had to develop his heliocentric theory on the foundation of many discoveries and findings by other scientists, mathematicians and astronomers.

Copernicus and the Heliocentric theory
Theme of the Portfolio
Brief of Work
Our work is inspired by the article related to the Scientific Revolution from the Junior Secondary History e-Reading Award Scheme 2024. The article inspiresour group to explore more about Copernicus.
Copernicus was indeed a lifelong learner with a passion for seeking knowledge and truth. He discovered that the explanations and theories of ancient Greece upheld by the people in his times contained mistakes. Therefore, he persistently made observations and studied to improve the understanding of the universe. Even though his Heliocentric theory was only published and circulated among European universities in the 1560s, twenty years after his death, his theories prevailed and eventually laid the foundation of humankind’s new understanding of the universe. From this, we learnt to appreciate his diligence, persistence and dedication in pursuing knowledge of the universe.
Therefore, we hope to use a scientific model to retell his ideas and shed light on this important history, and pay tribute to his role and contributions made to the development of astronomy. We created the model and attempted to incorporate STEAM elements.
Lastly, we put a LEGO Minifigure on Earth to represent Copernicus.

Guardians of Humanity: Unwavering Medical Pioneers in Face of War
Theme of the Portfolio
Brief of Work
War is always associated with bloodshed and brutality. However, the article entitled “War and Medicine’ in the Junior Secondary History e-Reading Award Scheme this year intertwines the two concepts, which intrigues us a lot.
Therefore, we decided to delve into the broader concept of ‘war’: the fact that war has been a pushing factor in medical development while acknowledging the merciless nature of wars. We researched three important figures working in medical field during wars. Florence Nightingale, the lady with the lamp, tirelessly attended to the wounded and perseveringly revolutionised the nursing system in the hostile environment of the Crimean War. Another one, Henry Dunant, who was driven by his empathy and turned his firsthand experience in the sanguinary battle into his effort to the founding of the Red Cross and adoption of Geneva Convention. Lastly, the physician, Patrick Manson, studied the mysteries of tropical diseases with his unwavering commitment. Undoubtedly, the efforts by these renowned figures exemplify the positive values of perseverance, empathy and commitment.
We hope that our project can shed light on their virtues. We, as young people, should take these lessons into heart and carry on their spirit in our everyday lives, contributing to the building of a harmonious society not to be plagued by wars.

The Jews in Shanghai during the Second World War and the positive values demonstrated amidst hardship
Theme of the Portfolio
Brief of Work
In the 1930s, the Jews were increasingly persecuted by Nazi Germany. Especially after 1938, many of them managed to leave Germany and moved to other parts of Europe. Some even fled as far as to China. The articles about Jewish refugees living in Shanghai during World War Two in the Junior Secondary History e-Reading Award Scheme wereindeed eye-opening, inspiring us to conduct a history project and investigate further.
In our project, we learnt that the Jews faced numerous challenges after seeking refuge in Hongkew, the designated Jewish residential area in Shanghai at that time. Yet, they exhibited perseverance in overcoming the difficult living conditions. Also, the Jews maintained a strong religious faith and continued their religious practices, finding solace and strength in the face of adversity. Also, despite differences in culture, language and customs, the Jews and the Chinese showed acceptance to each other by sharing resources and working together to overcome hardships. The friendship and solidarity between the Jews and the Chinese clearly demonstrated the importance of respect and mutual support.
Through conducting this project, we learnt the positive values of perseverance, solidarity, and resilience from the history of the Jewish refugees in Shanghai during the Second World War. This tragic episode serves as a testament to the strength of humanity, the power of unity in overcoming challenges, and the importance of cherishing peace and respect for others.

“Miracle of Shanghai”– Factors for the popularity of Shanghai among Jewish refugees fleeing Europe in the Second World War
Theme of the Portfolio
Brief of Work
After reading the article about the Jewish refugees in Shanghai during the Second World War, we not only knew more about the difficulties faced by them, but also, more importantly, how the Chinese in Shanghai helped the Jews who escaped to China. At that time, the local Chinese lived under hardship brought about by the Japanese invasion. However, they willingly helped the Jews by providing job opportunities, daily necessities and shelters. This episode of history reflects the spirit of empathy, humanitarianism and benevolence, which we should respect and uphold.
Furthermore, what amazed us was with the involvement of the Jews in the local community, business and financing sectors of Shanghai maintained operation to a certain degree. This was mainly resulted from the vital contribution of this group of Jewish population in Shanghai. Finally, throughout the turbulences of the Second World War, particularly the Japanese invasion in China, the unity and peace exhibited by the Chinese inclusiveness towards the Jews should not be forgotten in human history. We should treasure this piece of history and inherit the positive values and attitudes therein.
